Award winning secrets of what
to include in your
model airplane kit
Some of the big names that have
won awards in
recent years in rc model airplane flying for duration learned many of
their
lessons through often painful and expensive trial and error.
But many enthusiasts can benefit from the
valuable
experience to discover what to include in their model airplane kit that
will
make a huge difference.
Interestingly the use of Maxon Motor
components in your
model airplane kit can make all the difference.
Bob Wilder who has won awards with
durations of as high as
4hrs 17 minutes, has been quoted as saying that it was mainly as a
result of
Maxon Motor components which he says are amongst the best in the
industry, that
he started winning duration awards based on the performance of his
model
airplanes.
Apparently he came to this conclusion
after trying out
many different motors. Many times even when he tried other motors he
would
insist on using a Maxon gear box. This probably explains why a lot of
different
companies sell their motors with a Maxon gear box.
Again there are basically two types of
motors one can include
in their model airplane kit. One is the iron core motor and the other
is the
coreless motor. Coreless motors generally out-perform all other motors.
With batteries, the most efficient and
reliable is the
rechargeable nicad battery. Also quite popular is the nickel metal
hydride
battery.
There are however a few technical
problems here as far as
application to a model airplane kit is concerned. The advantage of the
nickel
metal hydride battery is that they have an amp hour rating that is
twice that
of the Nicad for the same size battery. The down side of Nicad
batteries is
that there are much fewer available sizes.
Lithium type batteries also offer high
amp-hour rating for
model airplane kit applications. However they have two disadvantages.
Firstly
they are only available in a few sizes and secondly the cost is usually
quite
high.
